Cold weather in winter often bring some common health complications like runny nose and sore throat. However, nowadays these health issues are frequently visible throughout the year, and the only difference is, in winter these health problems increase their activities.
According to the CDC, usually runny nose and sore throat are the first symptoms of common colds that followed by two known conditions coughing and sneezing. The majority of the affected persons recover from this within 7 to 10 days.
But, some people experience these health issues for a longer period and even sometimes develop several serious illnesses, like pneumonia or bronchitis. It actually happens to those persons who have weak immune systems or severe respiratory conditions, such as asthma. However, some effective precautions can help to reduce or avoid the risk of the said illnesses.
Common colds hamper the necessary activities of both children and adults. Adults can’t attend their workplace or fail to perform their daily activities properly during this time. Children miss their school because of common colds.
People usually get colds during winter and spring, and as already said the signs of this health problem include coughing, sneezing, sore throat, and runny nose. But, two more issues are there that frequently surface as important signs of colds. These signs are headaches and body aches.
Some effective steps to diminish the risk of getting colds:
Viruses, responsible for the common cold, can easily spread from an infected person to another one through close personal contact and air. Therefore, it is better to stay away from sick people as much as possible, because they can spread the viruses, which cause common colds through their close contact with other people.
Actually, close contact generally occurs by shaking hands with a sick individual who has a cold or by touching a surface that contains respiratory viruses and then touching nose, eyes or mouth. That means viruses enter the human body through these ways and easily make people sick.
Now, to prevent such ways of spreading viruses one should avoid touching mouth, eyes, and nose with his or her unwashed hands.
Washing hands with soap and water is a good habit because it helps to maintain hygiene and keep the hands clean and germ-free. According to the CDC, one should wash his hands with water and soap for twenty seconds. Adults should teach their children to follow this habit.
Sometimes soap and water may not be available while traveling in distant or remote places. At that time, hand sanitizer can be an effective alternative to maintain cleanliness. Importantly, viruses most often live on the hands, and so regular handwashing protects an individual from getting sick.
Apart from these common steps, there may be several other effective ways to maintain hygiene and to prevent common colds. Everyone should understand that availing proper protection is the best path to prevent illness.
